As probably one of the few visitors to Cambodia who skipped Angkor Wat and instead stayed solely in the capital and surroundings to be less on the tourist track, I would advise you to do it different than I did. In hindsight I regret not having been there and it pulls you somewhat down to have a full week of Khmer Rouge history immersion. It’s incredible what humans are able to do to each other. As a German I’m obviously well aware, but knowledge doesn’t make it easier to stomach… It is also the country where I learnt the concepts of “get your nails clipped and pay per nail” and “body weighing scale as a service”…
